How to Travel With a Dog in a Car

Going with a canine in the vehicle can be truly difficult for some. Not all dogs sit quietly and calmly. Some of our four-legged friends get sick in the car. Some are apprehensive and attempt to stow away or move onto the driver's lap. And some are overly excited in the car, becoming a nuisance and a terrible distraction to the driver. If any of these situations remind you of your furry best friend, here are three ways to make traveling in the car easier for your dog: Dog training, natural remedies, and/or dog travel accessories like a dog car harness.

Dog training

The first approach to making traveling with your dog in the car easier is the most difficult and time-consuming but offers the best long-term results. Commit to riding in the car with your dog at least once a day. Take a short drive, if you like, just a quick lap around the block. If possible, drive more than once a day. How does this approach help? It desensitizes your pet to car rides in the following ways:

  • A. A pet that tends to get sick in the car gets used to the car's movements.
  • B. A pet that gets nervous learns that it has nothing to fear.
  • C. A pet that gets excited in the car soon learns that it is just another car ride.

Take dogs that get nervous on short car rides to a fun place. Go to the pet store to purchase a toy or go to the recreation area. Combine car rides with something fun for your dog to do. This will not only teach your best friend that the car is nothing to be afraid of, but also that car rides can be fun. Do the opposite for excited dogs. Make the ride boring. Drive around the block or past the park, but do not stop.

Natural remedies

Ask your veterinarian about medications or natural remedies your pet can use. Depending on the severity of your pet's behavior in the car, the veterinarian may prescribe medication or advise you if certain natural remedies can be used. One such natural remedy is a spray with lavender in it. Lavender is a plant that is made into aromatic oil and is often used to relax people. It can also work for dogs. Some topical sprays or medicines can also help with car sickness.

If you do not want to use such remedies (maybe your dog has allergies), you can also consider portable travel utensils for dogs. Certain types of clothing for pets are thought to have a calming effect, much like swaddling a baby in diapers. Natural remedies do not always work, so use them with dog training.

In addition to dog clothes wipes, there are other dog travel essentials that make traveling with a dog in the car easier. A dog car harness, for example, can not only help secure your pet but also prevent your crazy or nervous dog from distracting the driver. A dog harness is not the only option, however. Consider putting your pet in a pet crate and then securing it in the car. Also, consider a dog restraint that allows you to keep your pet in the back seat. As with natural remedies, you'll get the best results if you use dog travel accessories in conjunction with dog training.

A dog car harness, dog restraint or natural tranquilizers can be a great solution for anyone traveling with their furry friend in the car. But remember that these methods only work as long as you use them. Proper dog training, on the other hand, can last a lifetime.
